Dr. Wu's philosophy
A good psychiatrist should offer comprehensive care, to help patients-
1. Achieve remission of symptoms with medications and a range of self-management techniques.
2. Overcome obstacles that predispose or maintain symptoms, which include improving the approach to work, study, and relationships. The patient is therefore able to face challenges ahead with new perspectives.
3. Psychotherapy to identify and pursue one's true emotional fulfillment and life goals. This includes healing past traumas and reaching one’s sense of self.
Our Services
Medications
Medication can be an important aspect of treating symptoms and preventing relapses. The selection and dosing of medications rest on the fine balance between benefits and side effects, thus clinical expertise and understanding of the patient's experience are required. Dr. Wu has over thirty years of clinical experience in managing medication regimes and sees his role as an advisor to help patients reach clear informed decisions.
Self-management techniques
Dr. Wu has developed a range of self-management techniques to help patients manage clinical symptoms including panic attacks, catastrophizing, insomnia, loss of motivation, disorganization, and inattention (in ADHD). These techniques are tailored to each patient's individual strengths and needs.
Psychotherapy and Art Therapy
Dr. Wu adopts principles of self-psychology, Buddhist, and Daoist philosophies to help patients reach greater self-awareness and life fulfillment. This is a process of understanding who we are and what we wish to achieve, as opposed to what others expect of us.
Dr. Wu is also a practicing artist specializing in Chinese ink art, which has a 1000-year history of providing healing to both artists and viewers.
Simple implements such as pencils and plain paper can help unfold profound awareness of one’s inner world. Dr. Wu's art website and publications on the subject can also be accessed at richardwu.com.au
